Where to Sow Cottage Garden Perennial Seeds

Sow seed on the surface of lightly firmed, moist seed compost and cover with a very light sprinkling of vermiculite. Place sown container in a propagator or a warm place at a temperature of 15-20°C (59-68°F). After sowing, do not exclude light as this helps germination.

What to do Next

When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into pots and trays. Plant out into borders when plants are large enough. Alternatively, Autumn sowings can be overwintered in a cold frame and planted out the following spring. Aquilegia seeds need light to germinate so either surface sow or give light dusting of vermiculite. Germination can sometimes be slow and erratic.

Handy Tip

Perennials are best planted in groups of 3 to 5 plants to create that cottage garden effect to your borders.
