Calanthe orchids bring elegant blooms to temperate gardens where most tropical varieties struggle. These hardy deciduous orchids bring a woodland feel to shaded spaces, producing delicate flowers from late winter through spring. Unlike their tender cousins, Calanthes tolerate cooler climates and prefer dappled shade with rich, moisture-retentive soil. Perfect for collectors seeking a garden orchid that naturalises over time, they reward patient growers with reliable seasonal displays and minimal fuss. Ideal for UK gardens and shaded borders.

Care Guide:

Light

Plant in partial to full shade. Dappled light under trees or a sheltered south-facing garden bed is ideal. Avoid strong afternoon sun.

Water

Keep soil consistently moist during active growth in spring and summer. Do not allow the soil to dry out completely.

Reduce watering in autumn as deciduous varieties die back and enter dormancy.

Temperature

Hardy garden varieties tolerate cool conditions and light frost once dormant. In very cold climates, apply mulch for winter protection.

Humidity

Outdoor humidity is usually sufficient. Ensure good air movement around plants to prevent fungal issues.

Soil

Plant in rich, well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter. Incorporate compost or leaf mould to retain moisture while allowing excess water to drain.

Fertilizer

Feed in early spring as new growth appears, then every 3-4 weeks during active growth with a balanced fertiliser. Stop feeding once flowering finishes and dormancy begins.

Pruning

After flowering, cut the flower spike back to the base. Allow foliage to naturally yellow and die back before removing.

Dividing & Maintenance

Divide clumps every 3-4 years in early spring just as new shoots emerge. Replant promptly and water well to help them re-establish.
